Reaching your goals may seem intimidating, but improving your routine by following these simple steps will make the path to reaching your goals that much shorter.

1. Make your bed.

We all know all of the excuses: “no one will see it,” “it's just going to get messy again tonight,” “I don’t have time.”  Ignore the excuses and do it first thing when you wake up. So many of us are used to waking up, going on our phones for a bit, slowly making our way out of bed and sauntering off to the kitchen to get breakfast. It just makes it that much more tempting to hop back in bed for a nap.

Instead, immediately getting up and making your bed starts your day off right. This might even encourage you to keep the rest of your room clean. Having an organized room leads to an organized life. It’s a small accomplishment that sets the tone for the rest of your day.

2. Eat a healthy breakfast.

We all remember our mothers telling us, “breakfast is the most important meal of the day!” and “your brain doesn’t run on empty!” Well, mothers are usually right. After you make your bed, eat right. I know it may be tempting to grab that sugary, delicious pop-tart for a quick meal but eating a healthy breakfast in the morning results in many advantages to your body: an increase in energy, improving your performance throughout the day, and other health benefits. All of these things will help you achieve your goals. You will get more tasks done and be more productive throughout the day, making strides towards completing your bigger goals.

3. Make a list.

Before heading to work or in your spare time, write down everything you want to accomplish on a to-do list. Divide the list into sections of your most time-consuming tasks and those that are easier. Tackle the things first that you dread doing the most so that everything else on your list seems easy. Reward yourself after you accomplish every task either by watching an episode of your favorite show, reading a chapter of your favorite book, or anything that you enjoy. After hard work, everyone deserves a reward. Plus, it encourages you to continue to put forth effort into completing your list. Every item checked off is another step closer to reaching your ultimate goals.

4. Develop healthy habits.

Be mindful about what you’re putting your time into: is it something that will contribute to achieving your goals? Manage your time wisely. We’ve all been there: realizing what we thought would be a quick scroll on social media turns into hours spent watching funny animal videos. Instead of spending hours a day scrolling on Instagram, Tik Tok, and other social media platforms, dedicate your time to healthy habits like exercising, getting fresh air, experiencing something new, expanding your knowledge, etc. Imagine if those hours were put into something that will help you get closer to your goal. Now that is time well spent.

5. Reflect on your day.

Before you go to sleep, take 30 minutes to an hour to reflect on everything you accomplished that day. Write your thoughts down in a journal or planner. Did you do everything on your to-do list? Is there anything you would change? Document your highs and lows. By monitoring your progress, you’ll be able to see how far you’ve come and how far you’ve got to go in reaching your goals
